There was a Karl Dodt who was born in Freest (Wrzeście), which is approximately 13km from Zwartowo, where Gustav Dodt was born. Karl’s family never migrated away Pommern, instead only leaving the area following the end of World War II.
On my visit to Wrzeście, a lot like all the former “towns” that the Dodts lived in, I discovered small villages with basically no infrastructure nor a population. There really was nothing more to see. If this was Australia you’d call these towns quaint, but to me they were more like the European equivalent to ghost towns in the wild west of America.
